Roberto Martínez was appointed the new manager of Everton on 5th June 2013 signing an initial four year contract.
The move came just a fortnight after Martínez had guided his former club Wigan Athletic to the FA Cup on 14 May 2013.
Martínez's Wigan side were relegated from the Premier League after a 4-1 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. A fortnight later, Martínez asked for permission to leave and interview for the vacant manager position at Everton.
Martínez himself is a former Spanish footballer who started off his career at Real Zaragoza, with whom he won the Copa del Rey. He spent a year at lower league side CF Balaguer, before signing for English Third Division side Wigan Athletic. Becoming part of a small Spanish contingent at the club known as "the three amigos" alongside Jesús Seba and Isidro Díaz, he was a regular first team player for six years, the longest period of time he spent at one club. During his time there, he won the Football League Third Division and the Football League Trophy.
He moved to Scottish side Motherwell, then to Walsall, before joining Swansea City in 2003. He became club captain, and lead the team to promotion to League One in 2005. He moved to Chester City in 2006, and was again chosen to be captain.
In 2007, Swansea contacted Martínez to offer him the position of manager. He accepted the offer and retired from playing, soon bringing success to the Swans. In his first full season, in 2007–08, he won the League One Manager of the Year Award as Swansea were crowned League One Champions, which took the club back to England's second-tier division after a 24-year absence.
In 2009, Martínez accepted an offer to become the manager of Wigan Athletic, who had been promoted to the Premier League in 2005. He subsequently guided them away from relegation in three consecutive seasons, whilst also leading the club to its first FA Cup in 2013.
