Everton vs Newcastle United Match Preview (13/05/2012)

Game Preview: Newcastle need to come to Goodison and attempt to win if they are to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League, it doesn’t seem that long ago since we played them and we qualified!

Everton are under less pressure but despite playing down the importance of finishing above Liverpool the players will know that a win can guarantee us that seventh place finish and a finish above the Reds.

Newcastle will be a different team to the one that we played earlier in the season and with both sides going for it then a draw seems the most likely outcome, lets hope Jelavic can send us off for the summer with a goal or two!

Newcastle’s Star Man: Hatem Ben Arfa. Obviously the goal threat of Papiss Cissé is a concern but it could more than likely be a moment of magic that wins this game and the midfielders could play an important role on Sunday. With the likes of Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa the Geordies are always a danger, Ben Arfa has scored at Goodison before and he is more than capable of producing something special from set-pieces.

Everton Team News: Leighton Baines could return at left back with possibly Jagielka dropping to the bench and Distin going back to centre back. Darron Gibson could also be back in midfield as could Phil Neville although he could replace Tony Hibbert at right back depending on who’s available.

Everton vs Wolves Match Preview (06/05/2012)

Everton could almost guarantee a seventh place league finish this Sunday with a win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

The already relegated Wolves will be no easy game and with the shackles removed it wont be as easy as some Everton fans may think, Wolves will have pride to play for and will be determined to give their fans something in their last home game.

Stoke Review: The performance against Stoke midweek was good considering what a tough place it can be nowadays. Steven Pienaar really shone and hopefully Tottenham will do what’s best for the player and not demand too much money for his services.

It was also very disappointing to see Victor Anichebe go off injured at Stoke, Victor has been really unlucky this season with injuries and hopefully he can now just get sorted in the summer and start next season with a clean slate.

Everton Team News: Everton will still be without Leighton Baines, Victor Anichebe and Jack Rodwell. Phil Neville and Darron Gibson are also doubts ahead of the trip to Molineux.

Other News: Nikica Jelavic has been awarded the player of the month trophy for April after some magnificent performances and goals!

Stoke City vs Everton Match Preview (01/05/2012)

The Fulham game on Saturday was a lot easier than most fans would have expected, Fulham never really seemed to show any spirit or determination to do anything at Goodison and in the end it felt like a bit of a routine victory for Everton.

Nikica Jelavic keeps scoring for us and it’s exciting to think about what he could do next season if we manage to hold the squad together.

Leon Osman played his 300th game for Everton on Saturday, which in this day and age isn’t a mean feat.

Finishing Above Liverpool: Playing against Stoke City on Tuesday night is going to be tough, but it’s a game we need to take something from if we are to finish above Liverpool.

It would be a small consolation but a consolation nonetheless and say and I can’t pretend I wouldn’t be happy to finish the season above them.

Everton And Stoke Similarities: It’s easy to see the similarities between Everton and Stoke, albeit they have come up from the Championship. Stoke have laid good foundations on and off the pitch with a newish stadium, excellent training facilities and great support.

Stoke’s team is getting better too, sure there not pretty but Everton weren't after they sold Rooney and we were forced to grind out results with Marcus Bent upfront on his own! The camaraderie between Everton’s players that season resulted in a top seven finish and we have built slowly but surely from there and it seems we are the model that Stoke too are trying to copy.

They do what they have to especially at the Britannia Stadium, while at Goodison they haven’t always been able to have their own way and Stoke's away form must frustrate their manager Tony Pulis.

Hopefully with the end of season in sight Stoke may take their foot off the pedal a little and give Everton a chance to win away, this is unlikely though and it could be a tough scrappy end of season game.

Everton will have a defence packed with tall centre half’s and they could all be needed with Stoke’s threat from set pieces who have the massive Peter Crouch in their team.

Team News: Leighton Baines and Jack Rodwell are still out for Everton and it will probably be a similar team to the one that played Fulham on Saturday. Stoke will be without defender Andy Wilkinson while Thomas Sorensen could play in goal for the Potters.

Everton vs Fulham Match Preview (28/04/2012)

Everton host Fulham this Saturday on the back of a magnificent draw against Manchester United which seemed like so much more!

It seems an eternity since we last played at Goodison and it will be a much more sombre atmosphere compared to our last home game when we were all gearing up for our trip to Wembley.

Fulham though are only a couple of places below us in the league and will fancy their chances at Goodison to jump above us in the table.

Fulham Danger Man: Fulham new star striker Pavel Pogrebnyak is in hot form and will be a player Everton will need to keep an eye on. He seems to have impressed more at Craven Cottage than in Fulham’s away games and hopefully this will be the case on Saturday.

Team News: Although we shouldn’t expect Everton to be as defensive as last Sunday, we are likely to keep a similar line-up to the United game. Tim Cahill is maybe the most likely to come in although he will most probably start on the bench. Midfielders Bryan Ruiz and Steve Sidwell will be out for Fulham.

Andy Johnson should return to his former stomping ground with Fulham while they should also have the former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy in their ranks, cue shouts of “Kopite cunt!” Murphy always seems to score from a free kick or something against us at Goodison and then you never notice him much more for the rest of the game!

Fulham have proved a hard team to break down this season and this is likely to be the case against us. At home though we should be able to create chances and hopefully be good enough to break through the Fulham backline.

Manchester United vs Everton Match Preview (22/04/2012)

Everton head to Old Trafford on the back of a defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup last week, Moyesie will no doubt tell the players that to go to Old Trafford and come away with something will be a good way of moving forward and getting a bit of pride back after the defeat at Wembley.

Old Trafford is a horrible place for Everton recently and in truth we never seem to come away with much to smile about.

It sometimes evens seems like we rollover and let Man Utd tickle our bellies, with us conceding that Manchester United will probably come out triumphant.

Baines is missing for Everton and Moyes could bring back Tony Hibbert and move Phil Neville to left back. Royston Drenthe has been doing god knows what again and Moyes looks like he’s fed up of the Dutchman and by all accounts it seems unlikely Drenthe will get much of a run out before the end of the season when his loan deal runs out.

It would not be a surprise to see Phil Jagielka back but Distin and Heitinga are favourites to start together in the centre of defence.

Darron Gibson will be looking to show the United fans what they’re missing after an impressive start to his Everton career. United fans probably didn’t shed many tears when they lost Gibson and likewise Evertonians thought he was a squad player and part of the Man Utd deadwood.

Gibson has come in and done a job for Everton in a similar way to Lee Carsley when he arrived and is now one of the first names on the team sheet. We have perhaps missed that kind of player who can dig in and pick up anything that comes through midfield.

It will be a close game and probably one with not too many chances for Everton, Jelavic will have to be on his game to make the most out of whatever little scraps we can manage.

Everton vs Liverpool FA Cup SF Match Preview (14/04/2012)

Everton head down to Wembley this weekend to face Liverpool in the FA Cup Semi Final in what promises to be the tie of the round!

Everton Team News: Everton have a more or less fully fit squad to choose from with the exception of Jack Rodwell who picked up a hamstring injury and Steven Pienaar who is cup tied.

Liverpool Team News: Liverpool will be without goalkeeper Pepe Reina and backup keeper Alexander Doni as they are both suspended which means Australian Brad Jones is likely to start in goal for them. In Truth despite Doni possibly edging it on Brad Jones, there’s not a great deal of difference between the two in terms of who Everton would like to see in goal and in some ways Evertonians might of preferred to see Doni in-between the sticks!

The Kick Off Time: The kick off time is terrible and surely this needs to be looked at in the future, The FA have made clear that this was the best possible time because of TV, Rail works etc but try telling that to fans who are rushing round trying to make their lifts at 4am in the morning!

The Referee: Howard Webb will referee this one and is a decent enough appointment and his debatably the best ref we have in this country at the moment. It was worrying that somebody brought to my attention him singing you’ll never walk alone on YouTube mind!

The Form Guide: Everton are the inform team but as you always hear form counts for nothing going into a Merseyside Derby.

The Everton Fans: Everton will have a slightly smaller allocation than Liverpool on the day due to segregation and issues like that, but that wont matter and undoubtedly Evertonians will out shout and out-sing their rivals from across the park.

The Liverpool Fans: The Liverpool fans will be remembering Hillsborough before kick off as will all the Evertonians and it looks set to be a fitting tribute to all those that died that day. Despite our differences when it comes to stuff like this we always come together but come kick off it will be business as usual.

Everton Danger Man: Nikica Jelavic is in hot form and will be determined to score against the reds. Rested against Sunderland on Monday Jelly will be fresh and ready for Liverpool fingers crossed!

Liverpool Danger Man: Steven Gerrard always seems to turn up against us and this shouldn’t be much different. Hopefully Gerrard has used all his luck up when he scored a hat trick against us earlier in the season at Anfield. Some have questioned his influence and Everton fans perhaps hoped he was on his last legs but there’s no doubt he is still one of the best players in the country and his passion alone for Liverpool makes him a constant threat.

Everton’s Weakness: Possibly on the left wing, with Magaye Gueye the likely starter. Gueye has come into the team when Pienaar has been cup tied and has constantly improved to be fair to him but until the last week or so Everton fans could name the team apart from that position with him or maybe Drenthe the most likely candidates. Moyes could surprise people and play Osman on the left and Coleman or something on the right but this seems really unlikely.

Liverpool’s Weakness: It would have to be the goalkeeper Brad Jones although with all he’s been through in the last year or so then the press will be building up for a Hollywood ending and despite him possibly not being match fit he’s still a good goalkeeper.

Everton’s Manager: The superlatives David Moyes has received this season have been thoroughly deserved but ultimately it means little to Moyes if he cannot pick up silverware. With Moyes linked with the Man United job in the next year or so then the next two years could be massive for Everton.

The Liverpool Manager: In my opinion Daglish has shown Everton respect this season when he’s been interviewed post and prior to the Derby games but the pressure is building on the Liverpool manager and although they wouldn’t admit it a defeat to us might have some of the diehards questioning whether he is the right man to lead them.

Everton’s Secret Weapon: Although he’s hit the net recently Tim Cahill has scored fewer goals than he would have liked this season but a goal against Liverpool would be the perfect time to get back on the goal trail.

Liverpool’s Secret Weapon: Andy Carroll scored against us earlier in the season and was by all accounts it was one of his better displays. With rumours of a summer departure (although this is never going to happen as it would be acceptance by Daglish that maybe he had made a bad signing!) Carroll needs to pull something out of the bag to live up to his big reputation and price tag, let’s hope he doesn’t get anything on Saturday!

Dream Scenario: Tony Hibbert bagging the winner in front of the travelling Evertonians! In reality a win of any sort will do nicely!

Everton vs Sunderland Match Preview (09/04/2012)

Everton face Sunderland this Easter Monday after sharing the points away at Norwich on Saturday. The Result was fair enough in the end although slightly frustrating considering that we were in front twice.

Sunderland will fancy their chances today though and will want to avenge Everton’s victory over them in the FA Cup. Everton should field quite a strong team but will have one eye on the Liverpool game next Saturday and will want to avoid any unnecessary injuries or suspensions.

It will be another tight game and will Sunderland hot on the heels of Everton in the league, however the Mackems will be hopeful of getting at least a point.

Sunderland’s record at Goodison has been dismal and hopefully that can continue today. Martin O’Neill spoke very well of Everton praising us for our performance last time out when it would have been easy for him not to.

Sunderland have a few injury worries with Cattermole, Bardsley and Bendtner all struggling with knocks picked up against Spurs on Saturday.

Everton could make a few changes to the team that faced Norwich and Johnny Heitinga should return to the centre of defence.

Our Prediction: Everton 1-0 Sunderland

Norwich City vs Everton Match Preview (07/04/2012)

Everton start off the packed Easter weekend with a trip to Norwich City. The Canaries very own Duncan Ferguson esque Grant Holt returns for Norwich which isn’t good news for the blues, However we’ve already proved this season we can go to tough away grounds and grind out results.

Drenthe could be back after his problems and will no doubt be looking to impress ahead of the Semi Final next week, with it now looking like it will be close call between him and Gueye for a place on the left side of midfield against Liverpool.

With Everton’s focus again possibly on Wembley then Norwich will fancy their chances and with Sunderland at home on Monday David Moyes could send out a mixed team at Norwich.

Hopefully we will have enough on show to avoid a repeat of the capitulation of Anfield.

John Ruddy has been impressive for Norwich and it’s easy to wonder why he was let go but hindsight is a wonderful thing and not many fans were too unhappy when he left Goodison.

He no doubt had the physical presence and qualities of a decent enough keeper but with Howard and others in front of him at the time then it was right that he moved on.

Paul Lambert has done a great job for them and has earned the right for the national press to spin out the old there must be something in the water up in Glasgow jargon.

We are more than capable of getting something there and keeping above of Liverpool ahead of next week but I have a feeling we will share the spoils at Carrow Road.

Everton vs West Bromwich Albion Match Preview (31/03/12)

Everton go into today’s game against West Bromwich Albion on a high after that magnificent win over Sunderland last Tuesday.

It wasn’t perhaps quite the close game we had maybe anticipated after Jelavic’s early goal knocked the wind out of Sunderland, but Everton went there and did a job on the Mackems and I don’t think too many of the Sunderland fans could argue that Everton deserved to go through.

The semi final with Liverpool now awaits and the prospect of an all Merseyside semi is enough to make you forget we do have a few league games before then starting with West Brom at Goodison today!

West Brom have been a well organised outfit under Roy Hodgson although talking himself up as a potential England manager for the future is maybe a bit premature.

West Brom have a few underrated players such as Jerome Thomas and Chris Brunt who can always strike a surprise on their day, also Paul Scharner is a bogey player for Everton and one we always need to watch out for.

Expect a close game today with maybe one or two goals in it.

Finally on the subject of Wembley all in all most Everton fans will be happy with the way the club has allocated tickets, however it would have been nice if a window of priority had been given to the Season Ticket holders who have attended all of the other FA Cup games first but never mind.

Sunderland vs Everton Match Preview (27/03/12)

Everton will head to Sunderland this Tuesday on the back of a magnificent 2-0 away victory over Swansea in Wales last Saturday.

Despite resting a few players Everton easily won against the Swans who did seem a little below par, but saying that take nothing away from a well deserved away Everton win.

The Evertonians were in unison praying for Jelavic to score again and up his confidence and goal tally ahead of the Sunderland game and he got his goal and went close to a few other occasions with fans perhaps thinking it wasn’t going to be his day at one point.

Pienaar was outstanding against Swansea and we will no doubt miss the little South African on Tuesday and let’s hope Moyesie can get him in on a permanent deal during the summer.

We’ve already gone on about Sunderland’s danger men prior to the first cup tie but they will have one or two key players returning in the form of Sessegnon and Cattermole. Again they are both great players; perhaps two of Sunderland’s better players but nothing for Everton to be too frightened of.

Sunderland will fancy this one though and can’t be taken lightly; some of their fans will already be pritt sticking sheets of tin foil to cut-outs of the FA Cup ahead of an anticipated victory. Make no bones about it they will go into the game favourites and with a packed Stadium of Light behind them it makes for a good atmosphere.

Everton’s fans though are out of this world and with 6,200 of us behind the goal on Tuesday then we can easily match Sunderland's support!

We will no doubt all expect songs about how were only here on a freebie, but let’s hope we’ll all be leaving with an Everton victory. Because that would be priceless!

Swansea City vs Everton Match Preview (24/03/12)

The defeat to Arsenal in midweek was disappointing and even more so once I’d seen the replay of Drenthe’s goal on Match of the Day later on that night. The mood before the game was predictably downbeat and Everton seemed there for the taking.

Arsenal could have been well in front by half time but eventually in the second half Everton did manage to wake up and were so close to coming away with at least a point.

Nikica Jelavic showed some good signs again in the week but worryingly did seem to get out battled for the ball on a few occasions but he does have natural talent and will hopefully score some goals once he settles in. His movement has been terrific and once his teammates are on par with his game then the signs look good.

Johnny Heitinga again commanded the defence with gusto and is making a good case for the captains armband in the future.

Swansea away I set to be a tricky one, and it could have come at a good time for the Welshmen as rightly or wrongly Everton have one eye on the FA Cup replay in Sunderland on Tuesday.

The Swans were easily brushed aside by Everton earlier in the season at Goodison despite forging some impressive victories against some of the league big guns. The Liberty Stadium has been a fortress for Swansea and undoubtedly has helped them pick up enough points to go into the Everton game in a position of relative safety.

Swansea have played some impressive football with the likes of Nathan Dyer who misses this game, Leon Britton and Scott Sinclair all adding to the attacking flair of Swansea who with their passionate fans behind them are definitely a force at home.

Gylfi Sigurðsson has been scoring a few recently and he is a player Everton will have to watch.

Everton could easily come unstuck here against one of the best passing teams in the league and with the possibility of Everton players being rested then I suppose some Evertonians would be happy to get a point on Saturday.

Let’s hope we can go to Wales and pick up the three points and go into Tuesday’s game on a high.

Everton vs Arsenal Match Preview (21/03/12)

Arsenal head to Goodison this Wednesday night to face Everton and it will be a pretty sombre atmosphere in the grand old lady after a disappointing draw against Sunderland last Saturday.

To draw against Sunderland is no mean feat! They have turned themselves into a determined and well organised football team under Martin O’Neill, however it was a great chance to reach the semi's and going up to their place will be a much harder task.

Mikel Arteta returns for Arsenal and will be no doubt be given a tremendous reception by the Evertonians for all he did for us. Personally I was fairly disappointed by the way Arteta forced his transfer through so close to the window but I don’t think any fans will hold that against him and can understand his reasons for leaving.

Arteta was by no means a spent force but he did certainly seem to have gone a bit stale at Everton and I think it was a good time to leave. His skill, invention and passing have been missed but I cant say the same about his free kicks which seemed to be aimed at the top of the Park End most of the time during the end of his tenure at Goodison.

Fans will be hoping for another night like the ones against City, Tottenham etc but its always a tricky game against Arsenal and they are on a good run at the moment and with confidence low at Everton it seems certain to be another hard game.

Pienaar’s return to the team will be a big boost and he was greatly missed against Sunderland in the cup. Johnny Heitinga is fast becoming a colossus at the back and Jags faces a bit of a task to get his place back.

Sylvain Distin was superb again on Saturday casually ushering the ball out of danger several times. His lack of pace is slightly worrying at times but he has showed he can gloss over that with the rest of his game.

Jelavic looked frustrated on Saturday and is obviously still adjusting to the English game not to mention the fact he’s still getting over an injury which may still be niggling him.

Lets hope for another one of them Goodison nights against Arsenal on Wednesday. Sure we’re disappointed we couldn’t finish job against Sunderland but were still in the cup, not far from the European places and there’s no reason why we cant do a job on the Gunners.

Arsène Wenger has unjustifiably in my opinion had his critics this season, although its easy to say that now Arsenal are on a decent run of their own. Your cant fault the loyalty and faith he has in his team but lets hope we can get him in a nark when he’s doing his pre match interview against Everton because in Wenger code that inevitably means we will have performed well.

Everton vs Sunderland FA Cup QF Match Preview (17/03/2012)

So it’s Sunderland in the FA Cup and it couldn’t come quick enough. After many defeats it’s easy to say that you knew as soon as you saw the team sheet it looked doomed, but on Tuesday night that certainly seemed the case.

Make no bones about it we weren’t at the races and Liverpool deserved their win but maybe we will see them again before the seasons out!

To turn it on its head the importance of this Saturdays game is massive and the prospect of a return to Wembley for a semi final will certainly make up for the midweek defeat across the park. Personally I don’t believe the semi finals should be played at Wembley but at least it means more of us may get a ticket, lets hope if we can get past Sunderland then were not just going to make up the numbers.

The Everton team you would expect will have a much more familiar look to it on Saturday and it will be surprising if a few of them players such as Heitinga, Cahill, and maybe even Jelavic don’t return.

Moyes could go back to a similar formation that fans are used to now and you would have to question the effectiveness of the Stracqualursi and Anichebe strike force from midweek.

Everton’s record at home to Sunderland is a good one but with O’Neil at the helm now its going to be a tough slog and not the free ticket some fans may be expecting. The prospect of a replay up at the Stadium of Light is too much for one week and hopefully we can all relax come Sunday and start looking into how we’ll all be getting down to Wembley for the semis!

Liverpool vs Everton Merseyside Derby Match Preview (13/03/2012)

Everton head to Anfield in relatively high spirits after victory over Champions League chasing Tottenham Hotspur and will fancy their chances in what promises to be a tightly fought encounter.

Everton will only really be without Darron Gibson and will be boosted by the return of South African midfielder Steven Pienaar.

Nikica Jelavić looks to have come in and broke his scoring duck at the right time for Everton fans and let’s hope that he can bang one or two in against them loveable reds in the derby this Tuesday night.

Sadly Liverpool thoroughly deserved their win at Goodison Park earlier in the season but here’s hoping that the result this time will be much closer. It’s been too long since Kevin Campbell’s strike last gave Everton the 3 points away at Anfield perhaps too long!

Going to Anfield is always tough and there is always that temptation to shut up shop and hope Liverpool won’t brake through which with the likes of Gerrard seems inconceivable. This isn’t the best Liverpool side and it’s by no means the worst but I don’t see any reason why we can’t cautiously take our game to Liverpool a bit more this time.

Everton will be backed by just under 3,000 fans officially at Anfield and at £48 a ticket lets hope Everton make it worth our while!

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview (10/03/2012)

Tottenham arrive at Goodison Park this Saturday evening seemingly deflated by a loss of form and lost impetus following weeks of speculation surrounding manager Harry Redknapp’s commitment to the Tottenham cause.

One ray of light for Spurs has been Louis Saha who is now not expected to play due to a gentlemen’s agreement struck between Everton and Tottenham. Saha couldn’t hit a barn door when at Everton with fans citing the lack of chances created and a bad injury record for his struggle to regain form. Saha has scored three goals already for Tottenham and it will be interesting to see how he does if he plays against us at Goodison.

Saha would of obviously have got a great reception from the Evertonians but there is an inevitability that he will come back to sting us eventually.

Spurs have got a cracking player who on his day is one of the best strikers in the league but with his contract running down at Everton, injury ridden an somewhat going through the motions, Everton fans were far from sad to see the French striker leave but it could be a good move by Happy Harry to get the best out of Saha in a team that creates plenty of chances and is challenging near the top of the league.

Steven Pienaar will be a big miss for Everton on Saturday with him unable to play against his parent club but Royston Drenthe showed glimpses of potential against Q.P.R and his talent is unquestionable but inconsistently remains his biggest problem and possibly the reason why Moyesie is reluctant to give him the full 90 minutes.

Tim Howard fresh from signing a new deal has been outstanding this season but an old foe in Brad Friedel will provide a massive task for Everton with Tottenham’s American between the sticks showing he’s not ready to be leaving on a jetplane back to the U.S just yet!

Tottenham absolutely battered us at White Hart Lane earlier in the season but at Goodison on a March evening with the Evertonians in full voice then it could a much closer result.

Nikica Jelavic could be given his first taste of what its like to play at Goodison even if he only comes on as a sub and he will be wanting to quickly show that he can cut it in the Premier League.

Spurs are one of a few teams that always seem to bring a good support to Goodison and they will be backed by Talksport presenter Paul Hawksee who is travelling to Goodison for the game.

Our Prediction is a for Everton to edge it by a goal but we’re always going to be biased but hopefully the blue boys will do it for us come Saturday evening and make Match of the Day worth watching!
